Hungry Ants Uplift/ Twittering Machine/ Underworld (Fairhurst/Giles)/ Heroic Roses/ The Chairman forms a Quartet (Harries)/ Manhatta (Townsend)/ Life's Little Failure/ While You're Sleeping . (All compositions written by Richard Fairhurst unless stated) The Hungry Ants are Richard Fairhurst - piano, Rhodes, and synths; Rob Townsend (tenor/soprano sax, flute and WX11/ Tim Harries - bass; Tim Giles - drums, electric percussion and whistle. With special guest ant: Stuart Hall - pedal steel and electric guitar.
Hungry Ants release their second CD on Babel. Their music is imaginative, creative and very much of the moment. Influences from jazz merge with contemporary sounds and beats. The compositions are inspired from a number of sources including silent films and the paintings of Paul Klee. The interplay between the musicians is striking. Many of the compositions are by pianist and keyboardist Richard Fairhurst. Though just 26, he has already been a Steinway International Artist for over three years. He was also a finalist at the piano competition of Montreux Jazz Festival. Review from Jazzwise (Kenny Mathieson) ‘Myrmidons has been a while coming, partly due to the fact that drummer Tim Giles was afflicted with RSI and could only play occasionally. It is here at last and has been worth the wait. They make imaginative contemporary jazz which also draws on musical colourings from a variety of other areas, from electronic music (check the Paul Klee inspired “Twittering Machine”) through to classical. The music is imaginative, creative with contemporary sounds and beats. Inspirations include silent films and Paul Klee’s paintings. Fairhurst is a somewhat undervalued player on the current UK scene, and has yet to make the major impact promised. Myrmidons is a timely reminder of his potential.’
