" We're back for more, and it's bigger and more exciting than ever. There's a wealth of talent here already, who this time are able to attract world-renowned groups to work with them.

Starting with the BBC Big Band on 6 July, there are gigs all the way through the week, culminating with FREE Jazz on the Piazza on 14 and 15 July."

OPENING EVENT:

BBC Big Band at the Winter Gardens, 6 July

Featuring Christine Tobin and composer Mike Gibbs

The BBC Big Band makes a rare visit to Kent, so it's great that there is the chance to hear them live. They will be performing with special guest Christine Tobin, one of the great original singers in Britain today (and Margate resident). Composer Mike Gibbs is famous for his wide-ranging work with everyone from Kenny Wheeler and John Dankworth through to Whitney Houston.

BOOK HERE

The main weekend is on 14 and 15 July. It will include return visits from the hKippers (featuring Oscar winning composer Stephen Warbeck and Paul Bradley (Holby City's Elliott Hope)), Ian Shaw, Sarah Jane Morris, John Etheridge, Annie Whitehead, The Harbour Big Band, and, from Lille in France, a special visit from the Jeremie Ternoy Trio.
The Piazza is located just along the sea front from the Railway Station, in the Old Town. There are several cafes, bars and pubs with tables out overlooking the jazz. Particularly, check out the Harbour Cafe - "Vortex on sea".

Margate:
Margate is 75.7 miles from The Vortex in London down the Thames estuary, just before the tip of Kent. It takes 100 minutes by train from Victoria (and then 5 minutes walk along the prom to the festival), or you can whizz down the M2/A299. One of the oldest seaside resorts in the UK, and the original home of artists such as JMW Turner and Tracey Emin. Some of the best sunsets around, and also a great atmosphere in the Old Town for the Jazz Festival. You can also bathe in the special sea bathing pools, or visit attractions such as the Shell Grotto. Would that Evan Parker did a gig there one day?
En route, you can stop for some oysters in Whitstable or marvel at the ruined church at Reculver (just beyond Herne Bay).
