Questionnaires to the musicians.

Phil Robson answers questions about his debut solo release, Impish

What has inspired you for your new album?

I have always loved playing in a trio situation which most of this CD is. The possibilities for dialogue are great and it makes me re-think my approach to my instrument. John Taylor plays on four tracks and needless to say, I love his playing and have always wanted to work with him.

When did you start it?

It was recorded in October 2001. I got the trio together earlier that year although I had played with Asaf and Dave before that with Christine Tobin. I started writing for it and choosing material in the summer.

Who's timeless music you always go back to ?

Miles - Always. alley. We think every musician has a good life but knowing that's not the rule to all, tell us something funny you've experienced while on the road recently. Saw a guy in a hotel in Sheffield with incredible right-angled ears. Don't like to be cruel but couldn't help but laugh when the bassplayer asked me if I had checked out 'bugger lugs'!

What have you been listening to recently which you haven't been able to take out of the CD player? 'Desperado' - Pat Martino. Killing! For some reason had never heard it until recently. He plays twelve-string guitar on it in a way that could only be described as "rock hard"! The music is death jazz meets Bitches Brew with a touch of 'Sesame Street'. Right up my alley.

Why did you choose the guitar?

I was inspired having bought 'The Ace of Spades' by Motorhead.

Who are your heroes, musically or otherwise?

I have many but some are: Miles, Betty Carter, Ornette, Elvin Jones, Hendrix, Marlon Brando, Woody Allen etc etc. How else do you get your inspiration? Things I experience in day to day life t at strike me as interesting. This could be anything from fox watching with Christine T to gate crashing weddings at Stoke Newington Town Hall.
