"Building on the tradition of John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Julian Siegel and Phil Robson are names to watch. (Wolf Kampmann, Jazzthetik (Germany), May 2001)
"Jazz that makes you blink in its glare" The Guardian
"The all star UK jazz band whip up an incendiary heat" Jazzwise
One of the first of the newer generation of UK improvising bands to be influenced as much by Jimi Hendrix as by Miles Davis or Sonny Rollins, Partisans has been gripping audiences with its ferociously energetic performances since its formation in 1996. Their visceral, groove-based sound combines bop lines with rock riffs and flowing melodies, bridging the gap between New York straight-ahead, rock and the US jam-band scene. Alongside Phil Robson and Julian Siegel, Partisans is Gene Calderazzo (drums) and Thad Kelly (bass). They have recorded 3 CDs including their second Sourpuss on Babel with the band's latest , Max nominated for the album of the year in the 2006 BBC Jazz awards. Max also features guest appearances by Jim Watson (organ), Thebe Lipere (percussion) and Chris Batchelor (trumpet).
Partisans clearly takes into the 21st century the strength of the British jazz rock scene evolved around not just McLaughlin but also with Robert Wyatt and Soft Machine in the early 70s. All the musicians confirm their awareness of that past but also the diversity which is the hallmark of London life. The consistency of line-up and commitment of the band members has given a cohesion and empathy . Despite increasing demands elsewhere, it is still to Partisans that they all feel the closest bond.
In 2007 Partisans reached the rare milestone in jazz of a band that had been a decade together and celebrated with a monthly residency at the Vortex Jazz club in Dalston. Their third album for Babel 'By Proxy' was released in June 2009 receiving among others 4 star reviews from both the Times and the Guardian..
